The 440 ‘RB” engine heritage dates back to 1958, starting with the 350 cubic inch block ‘B’ engine. The ‘B’ engine was offered over the years in displacements of 361, 383 and 400 cubic inches. In 1958 Chrysler introduced a version of the ‘B’ engine with a raised deck block, giving it a longer piston stroke. The new engine displaced 383 cubic inches and would be the first ‘RB’ engine into production. In the following years displacement was increased to 413, 426 and 440 cubic inches.
The 440 ‘RB” engine was an available option on most Chryslers musclecars of the late 60’s and early 70’s including Charger, Challenger, Road Runner, GTX, Super Bee and more. 440’s also powered many of Chrysler, Dodge and Plymouths large cars, motorhomes and trucks. Production of the 440 ‘RB’ engine ceased in 1978.
